Review - The Everafter by Amy Huntely

The Everafter by Amy Huntley
Read by Tavia Gilbert
Publisher: Brilliance Audio 2009
5 CDs 5 hours 7 minutes

The premise of The Everafter by Amy Huntley is an intriguing one: what if after we died we lived in a sort of limbo, stuck with the objects we lost during our lifetimes, able to reconnect with our former life by those reminders of loss. This is what 17 year old Maddy is left with. She knows that she is dead, she doesn't know why, but what she does know is that she is in an indescribable emptiness. As she relives moments in her life, she draws ever closer to the events leading to her death, proving that even in death there is room to grow.

While the story is engaging, the narrator of the audio book version virtually ruins any connection I could have felt for the main character. Her portrayal of Maddie's voice was of a simpering valley girl, not the sweet naive girl that we get to know in the story. For this reason I give the book only two stars, along with the fact that I believe that this book would have limited appeal to anyone who wasn't a 17 year old girl.
