Review - How to be Alone by Jonathan Franzen

How to be Alone: Essays by Jonathan Franzen
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux 2002
Hardcover 278 pages

I'm having a hard time liking Jonathan Franzen. I know, he's a mega successful "serious" author, which is a rare and marvelous fete in today's society with our Danielle Steels and Dan Browns. The fact that I can agree with *most* of his ideas also should endear his writing to me. But alas, I like him not and I think I know why. Jonathan Franzen is a whiner. While it is completely valid to rail against the dumbing down of society, Franzens unyielding rant against modern society is just boring and often misses the mark completely. Maybe I am just more optimistic being from the Pacific Northwest and more importantly from a very well read and book-loving city.
