Review - When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
Read by Cynthia Holloway
Publisher: Random House 2009
4 discs 4 hours 20 minutes

The 2010 Newbery Award winner, When You Reach Me, follows the story of a latch-key kid, Miranda, in late 1970's New York. As her single mom is busy preparing for an upcoming appearance on the TV game show, $20,000 Pyramid, Miranda begins to find strange notes that are left to her from a mysterious person who seems to know the future. The notes frighten Miranda, but she can't ignore their disturbing message: "I am coming to save your friend's life, and my own. I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter."

As she deals with the changing relationship with her best fried Sal, who no longer seems to want to talk to her, to making new friends and dealing with the crazy homeless man living under her mailbox, Miranda finds the courage and strength to do what she knows is right and may just end up saving her best friends life.

It takes some getting used to the narrator of the story in the audiobook version; her voice can be a tad too high at times. As the print version is only 199 pages, I would recommend taking the time to read it instead.
