Review - Is it Just Me or is Everything Shit? by Steve Lowe and Allan McArthur

Is it Just Me or is Everything Shit? by Steve Lowe and Alan McArthur
Publisher: Hachette Book Group 2008
Hardcover 259 pages

Yes. Yes, it is.

Okay, so I know that this book is satire and that it is not meant to be taken seriously. I know that it is supposed to be exposing the ridiculous substance which is the marrow of our modern culture. Knowing this I had high hopes for this book, but the satire is not comedic, it is just whiny. And the "insanely annoying modern things" are out of date within minutes (i.e. all of the Bush administration jokes) or they never made any sense to begin with (i.e. Toy Cars... really, Toy Cars? Who cares!?!)

There are a few chuckles to be had, but only if you can look past the fact that the authors are trying way too hard to be funny. If I could give one piece of advice to the authors of this book it would be this:

...just because something was funny when you and your mates were sitting around watching football and drinking beers (or sipping wine and pouring over a recent Harpers Weekly) that does not mean that the rest of the world will think it is funny. Just saying.
